IELTS Writing Task 2 (Essay) Question

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.


Ideas/Essay Planning

View 1 (children making their own choices will result in them thinking about their own wishes)

  1. If children listen to their parents, they learn the importance of compromise
  2. Even as an adult, one does need to listen to and take into account the opinions and needs of those around oneself

  3. Also, children are too immature and making their own decisions unilaterally may lead to major issues. Adult guidance is needed 
    E.g., entertainment (important to watch age-appropriate content and within limits, parental control), food (a balanced nutritional diet is a necessity), studies (what subjects to study)

View 2 (important for children to make decisions)
  1. Help children to develop their own personality, an individual identity
  2. Help children gain confidence
  3. Prepare them for the future; they gain experience in decision-making which they would need to do as grownups/adults
