It is observed that shopping on the Internet is increasing in popularity.

Is it a good or bad development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.


Sample Essay

In recent times, online shopping has become the preferred mode of purchasing things as compared to traditional methods, such as visiting brick-and-mortar shops and stores. This has been a result of a combination of factors including easy internet access and busy lifestyles.

As with most things, this trend has both positives and negatives. One obvious merit is that buying products from online platforms, an example of which is Amazon, can give more choices to customers than is practically possible for any physical store. Moreover, it is a big boon for those who find it difficult to make time to go shopping because of their personal and professional commitments. After all, one can shop online at any time of day or night from any location. Last but not least, it offers contactless shopping, something which has found exceptional favour with most in the post-Covid world.

On the other hand, there are certain demerits of buying things on the internet. One major issue is that it is impossible to gauge the quality of products from images. Additionally, many sellers cheat consumers by misleading them about the details of the items being sold. However, these problems are taken care of with features such as free return of products and allowing the customers to rate both the product and the seller, which most shopping websites have.

All in all, I firmly believe that choosing to shop through online portals is a positive trend and any minor problems arising from this can be easily resolved.
