Zoos (Vocabulary for speaking and writing)

Zoos: establishments where wild animals are kept, usually for display to the public; animals are kept in cages/enclosures

Wildlife sanctuaries/National parks: areas where those animals are kept that cannot survive in the wild; protected natural habitats; animals are not caged

Natural habitat of an organism (a plant or an animal) is an area (environment) where they naturally live.

Wildlife sanctuaries & national parks provide an environment for animals which is close to their natural habitat.

Rare animals/species: animals/species which are uncommon; at risk of extinction because they have a small population and are limited to certain regions

Endangered animals/species: animals/species which are less in number; at risk of extinction due to human activities such as poaching or deforestation

Synonyms for zoos (do not have exactly the same meaning as zoos but can replace it in certain contexts):

  1. Animal conservatories
  2. Wildlife parks
  3. Wildlife conservatories
  4. Zoological parks
  5. Zoological conservatories
  6. Menageries
