The given illustrations depict the different stages in the life of the silkworm and how silk cloth is produced.

There are four steps in the life cycle of a silkworm which takes a total of approximately ten weeks. The journey of a silkworm’s life begins with eggs which are laid by an adult moth on mulberry leaves. Next, these eggs hatch after a period of 10 days, and silkworm larvae emerge. These larvae feed on the mulberry leaves. In the third step, 4-6 weeks down the line, the larvae start spinning out silk thread to wrap around themselves. Subsequently, after 3-6 days, a cocoon is formed which completely encompasses each larva. Finally, the adult moth emerges from the cocoon after a fortnight. This adult silk moth lays eggs and the cycle continues.

For producing silk cloth, there are a total of six steps from the selection of the cocoon to the dyeing of the thread or the cloth. Firstly, a cocoon is selected, which is then boiled in water. The third step involves unwinding the boiled cocoon to get threads 300-900mm in length. In the next step, the threads are twisted to make thicker, longer threads. These threads are then woven to produce silk cloth. Either the thread or the cloth can be dyed.
