Sample Essay 1

In today’s world, environmental degradation is an issue that impacts every organism on planet earth and is one of the biggest challenges being faced by humans. While it is generally opined that it is our responsibility to ensure that the environment is preserved and protected for the future generations, there are a few who argue against this opinion.

Those who oppose it being the responsibility of present generation to ensure environmental protection assert that the existing predicament is a result of many generations playing fast and loose with the environment and so, why should one generation be weighed down with this mammoth task.

However, taking this stand reeks of shirking responsibility. The fact remains that we have inherited a planet which is battling perilous environmental issues such as climate change. As many studies have shown, this is high time that steps are taken to, first, stop the degradation and then, reverse it too. The grave responsibility falls on the humans inhabiting the earth today as it has the scientific knowledge that their antecedents did not have, to understand the gravity of the current environmental situation and fight it. Moreover, one of the reasons for the ruin of environment is the consumer culture and materialistic mentality that have become an integral part of modern lifestyle. These, along with harming the environment, have also resulted in stress and dissatisfaction for people. Hence, reversing this way of living will serve the dual purpose of ensuring ecological balance and individual happiness.

I strongly believe that not only should we conserve the environment for future humans but we should also do so for all the flora and fauna of the world. The planet earth is ours for the duration we are on it both to enjoy it and to safeguard it; therefore, sustainable development needs to be the motto of one and all.
