IELTS SPEAKING (What happens during the speaking test; What to expect during the speaking test)

Time duration: 11--14 minutes

Three sections

Before the first section,

  1. The examiner will introduce him or herself
  2. Ask you to introduce yourself
    (Please tell me your full name./What is your full name?;
    What shall I call you?/How shall I address you?)
  3. Check your identity document (E.g., Passport)

The Speaking test is made up of three sections:

Introduction & Interview

4-5 minutes

2-3 topics

Familiar topics (e.g., work, studies, home, and hometown)

Personal experiences and preferences on any topic (e.g., hobbies, computers, public transport, recycling, and daily routine)

Part 2

Individual long turn/

Cue card

(Monologue)

3-4 minutes

A question is shown to you (the question includes four points to include in your answer.

You will be given a paper and pencil.

You will get one minute to prepare and make notes.

You will then be asked to talk for 1-2 minutes.

The question will be in front of you throughout.

The examiner will ask you one or two questions on the same topic.

 

Part 3

Two-way discussion

(Follow up questions to Part 2)

(Conversation)

4-5 minutes

Discussion about abstract issues and ideas. General questions are asked asking for your opinion.

Questions asked on topics which are vaguely connected to the question asked in Part 2.

They are not questions about what you have spoken in Part 2.
